Which TOEFL Test Format is offered in Pakistan?

CBT (Computer-Based Test) Format is no longer available in Pakistan. TOEFL is now mainly offered in Internet-Based Testing (iBT) Format.

Is the new iBT Test Format really different and difficult?

The TOEFL iBT Test uses an entirely new approach. For the first time ever, the TOEFL test will assess your ability to integrate English skills and to communicate about what you read and hear.
The TOEFL iBT Reading and Listening sections are not dramatically different from those in the TOEFL PBT test.
The integrated tasks on the TOEFL iBT Speaking and Writing sections may be considered more challenging because they are new to test takers. However, to succeed academically in English-speaking colleges and universities, students need to be able to combine their language skills in the classroom. The integrated tasks in the new test will help learners build the confidence needed to communicate in the academic environments they plan to enter.

Or send an email to “toefl@ets.org”.

What score do I need for entry into a US or Canadian degree program?

This will vary, with each college, school and university setting its own minimum score. Some universities will tell you that they don't have a minimum requirement; usually these universities are the best ones, like Stanford or Harvard. However, even though they don't have a "requirement," most of the people who go to these universities have high TOEFL scores. Check each college catalogue or the university website for specific requirements.

Who is exempted from taking TOEFL test?

If you have completed the last two years of your baccalaureate degree or one year of graduate school in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada (except Quebec), or Australia, you are exempt from the TOEFL exam. You are not exempt if the language of instruction was in English, but is not the native language of the country, or if you have lived in an English-speaking country for several years.

What is the scope of TOEFL Institutional Test?

The Institutional TOEFL is the TOEFL that is given by a place so that they can measure the English level of the people who take the test. The score you receive from this test is NOT good for every university in the world. However, many colleges will accept a TOEFL score from the Institutional TOEFL. If you want your TOEFL Score to be accepted at every university in the world, then you need to take the International TOEFL.

How can I best prepare myself for the test?

At the very least, you should familiarize yourself with the test format, and practice some questions beforehand. The amount of practice you need will depend on your English language ability, the time you have available before you take the test, and how familiar you feel with the test format. In addition, a number of institutions offer test training courses or private tuition for the TOEFL.

How early should I arrive at the test center?

Report to the test center at least 30 minutes prior to your appointment for check-in. If you arrive late, you may not be admitted and your fees will be forfeited.

What must I bring with me on the day of the test?

You must bring valid identification and your registration number on test day. All test takers in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh must use only valid passports with name, photo and signature. Original documents must be presented; copies are not acceptable. Identification requirements are strictly enforced.
If your passport is not written in English-language letters, you must provide a second form of ID that has a clear, recent photo and English-language letters.

Second Forms of ID are:

  • A government-issued ID including but not limited to: a passport, driver's license, state ID cards national identification or military identification.
  • Confirmation of identity letter from your school, which must contain your name and signature, date of birth, a clear, recent photo, the name of your school and the date issued.

Your letter must be typed on the school's original letterhead. The signature of a school official and the school seal must overlap your photograph. A letter of identity is valid for 1 year.
If you refuse to have your ID verified, you will not be permitted to take the test and you will forfeit your test fee.

For how long is TOEFL Score valid?

TOEFL Score is valid for only two years. In other words, two years after you take your TOEFL, your score will be deleted from the official TOEFL database and they will not send you another report of your score. If you still have a copy of your original score, you can ask the university whether they will accept it, but most universities will not accept a copy from you; they require a score directly from TOEFL.
