BIOTECHNOLOY DEFINED: Biotechnology is defined as the Application of Biological Systems to Basic and Technical and Industrial Processes. These Processes are based on the use of some form of Biological Catalyst in the conversion of a substrate (Material / Substance) to a desired product. These Biological Catalysts are simple as Enzymes or highly complex Microorganisms or Eukaryotic Cells.

Biotechnology can be viewed as a group of useful, enabling Technologies with wide and diverse Applications. It has large, highly profitable, modern industrial outlets of great value to society e.g., DNA Recombinant Technology, most revolutionary branch of the modern science and have a profound impact on Medicine, contributing to the Diagnostics and Cure of Hereditary Defects and Serious Disease and the Development of New Bio-Pharmaceutical Drugs and Vaccines for Human and Animal use. It also deals with the modification of Microorganisms, Plants and Farm Animals for improved and tailored Food Production and to increased opportunities for Environmental Remediation and Protection.

New Technologies dealing with Plant and Animal Breeding are much faster and have lower costs. Genetically Modified Crops are growing exponentially. The field is further exemplified with the Industrial Production of Enzymes like Proteases, Amylases, Celluloses and Lipases, Industrial Manufacturing Plants for Milk and Milk Products, Alcohols, Organic Acids, Antibiotics, Vitamins, Growth Promoting Factors and Monoclonal Anti-Bodies.

Eligibility

BS Biotechnology:

1. HSC (Pre-Engineering Group) / A-Level / Equivalent (with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry) with 45% Minimum Marks OR
2. HSC (Pre-Medical Group) / A-Level / Equivalent (with Biology, Physics and Chemistry) with 45% Minimum Marks

MSc Biotechnology:
BSc / Equivalent (with 01 Subject being Microbiology / Biochemistry) with 45% Minimum Marks

Final Merit List Weightage Criteria

Final Merit List is based on the Following Criteria:

Admission Test Pattern

• BS Biotechnology and MSc Biotechnology Morning Admissions are based on Admission Test
• BS Biotechnology Evening Admissions are based on Previous Academic Record
• Minimum Qualifying Marks in the Entrance Test For All Programs is 50%
• Each Correct Answer carries 01 Mark
• Negative Marking: Each Wrong Answer carries -1/4 Mark
• Test Calculation Formula: C – W/4

 

Required Documents
(By Selected Students)

Candidates whose Names appear in the Admission List will have to complete all formalities for Admission within the stipulated time, otherwise their Admission will lapse and no claim will be entertained.

Following Documents are to be submitted for completion of Admission:

1. Original Marks Sheet: Original Mark sheet of the Prerequisite Qualification [Intermediate / Equivalent for BS (Hons) and Graduation / Equivalent for Masters Program (Non-Returnable)]
2. Character Certificate: Character Certificate from the Head of the Institution last attended For External Candidates a Character Certificate from any Gazette Officer (Non-Returnable)
3. CNIC: Original and Photocopy of the CNIC of the Candidate In case Candidate is below 18 Years: Original & Photocopy of Father's / Mother's CNIC. (Original will be returned after verification)
4. Original Certificates: Original Certificate of Matric / O-Level / Intermediate / A-Level and Attested Copy of the same (Original Documents will be returned)
5. Photographs: 10 Recent Photographs (02x11 / 02 inch)
6. Affidavit: Affidavit by Oath Commissioner on Judicial Paper (Sample is given in Admission Booklet)
7. Tuition Fee: Payment of Prescribed Tuition Fee of Karachi University
